EV Charger Installation Costs in Ontario: Level 2 Pricing Tiers Explained

EV Charger Installation Costs in Ontario: Level 2 Pricing Tiers Explained

Updated for 2026. A Level 2 EV charger installation in Ontario typically costs $800 to $2,600 for a straightforward job, and $4,000 to $7,000 when your electrical panel or a long cable run complicates things. The charger unit itself adds roughly $400 to $800 on top.

The three EV charger pricing tiers I actually quote

After hundreds of EV charger installs across the GTA, every job falls into one of three tiers. The tier is decided almost entirely by your electrical panel and the distance from panel to parking spot — not by the brand of charger you bought.

TierWhat it coversTypical installed cost (CAD)
BasicPanel has capacity; short 240V run to an attached garage; plug-in or hardwired unit$800 – $1,600
StandardNew 40–60A dedicated circuit, load management, longer in-garage run, wall mount and commissioning$1,600 – $2,800
ComplexPanel upgrade, service work, trenching to a driveway pad or detached garage, permit-heavy scope$3,500 – $7,000+

The single most common surprise is the panel. Many GTA homes — especially 100-amp service in older Toronto stock — need a panel or service upgrade before a 40 or 60-amp charger circuit can be added safely. That is not upselling; it is the difference between a charger that works and a main breaker that trips every evening.

What a proper Level 2 installation includes

A professional install is more than screwing a box to the wall. We verify panel capacity and load calculations, run a properly sized circuit with the right breaker, use appropriate cable (and conduit where exposed or buried), install a disconnect where required, set charger amperage to match the circuit, test ground-fault protection, and file the ESA notification of work. You get an inspection and a certificate — the same paperwork a future buyer or insurer will ask for.

Charger hardware runs $400 – $800 for quality 32–48A units, and $800 – $1,500 for premium smart chargers with load management and app control. Our EV charger installations are quoted labour-and-materials separately from hardware so you can buy the charger you want without inflated bundle pricing.

Charging speed: what 32A, 40A and 60A really mean

Level 2 charging on a 240V circuit adds roughly the following per hour of charging:

  • 30A circuit (24A continuous): about 25–30 km of range per hour — fine for overnight charging of a commuter EV.
  • 40A circuit (32A continuous): roughly 35–45 km per hour — the sweet spot for most single-EV homes.
  • 60A circuit (48A continuous): 55–70 km per hour — right for large-battery vehicles, two-EV households, or anyone who drives 150+ km daily.

Here's the practical math: a typical Ontario commuter drives 40–60 km a day. Even the smallest Level 2 circuit recovers that in under two hours overnight. Bigger circuits mainly matter for large batteries, cold-weather charging losses, and future-proofing a second EV.

When your electrical panel becomes the real project

A 60A charger circuit is a serious load — comparable to an electric range. On a 100A service running electric water heating, a dryer, and air conditioning, the numbers often don't balance, and Ontario's electrical code requires that load calculation to be done honestly. The fixes, in order of cost:

  • Load management: a smart device that throttles charging when the house is busy — adds $300 – $600 and solves many borderline panels.
  • Panel upgrade to 200A: the permanent fix, typically $2,500 – $4,500 combined with the charger run rather than standalone.
  • Trenching to a pad or detached garage: $45 – $85 per foot of trench plus conduit, cable and restoration.

This is why two neighbours can pay $1,200 and $6,500 for the "same" charger. In newer subdivisions across Vaughan and Brampton the panel usually has room; in pre-1980s housing, plan for us to look at the panel first.

Rebates, permits and paperwork

Ontario periodically offers EV purchase incentives, and federal programs have funded public charging infrastructure; check current availability before you budget. What never changes: the installation itself requires an ESA notification of work and inspection in Ontario, and your local utility should be informed of the added load. We handle both as part of every quote. On the operating side, ask your utility about ultra-low overnight (ULO) rate plans — charging between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. can cut your per-kilometre cost nearly in half, and every smart charger on our trucks schedules around those windows automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an EV charger myself?

Plug-in units using an existing properly installed 240V outlet are legal to use, but running a new 240V circuit is electrical work Ontario reserves for licensed electricians with an ESA permit. Given that a fault here involves 40+ amps beside your vehicle, this is not the DIY project to learn on.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Ontario?

At typical residential rates around 12–13 cents per kWh off-peak, a full charge of a 60 kWh battery costs roughly $7–8 and covers 350–400 km. Even at peak rates, home charging costs a fraction of gasoline — most of our clients spend $30–50 a month on electricity.

Do I need 200-amp service for an EV charger?

Not always. Many 100A and 200A panels accept a 40A charger circuit after a proper load calculation, and load management stretches capacity further. We measure actual load before recommending a panel upgrade — if your home qualifies without one, we tell you.

What charger brands do you recommend?

We install what the major EV makers' owners ask for — Tesla Universal Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home, FLO, and Grizzl-E — based on connector type (NACS vs J1772), smart features and warranty. The install cost barely changes between brands; the electrical scope stays the same.

Can you install a charger for a driveway or condo parking spot?

Driveway pads and detached garages are routine — they just move the job into the complex tier with trenching. Condos are a different process entirely involving the corporation and Section 98 approvals; we handle those through a separate condo-focused workflow.
